Chicka Chicka Boom Boom! – is a bestselling children’s book that was written by Bill Martin, Jr.and John Archambault and is an excellent resource for Prep children to learn their letters – both lowercase and uppercase. It begins with all the lower case letters climbing up a coconut tree in alphabetically order, but suddenly the tree gets too heavy and all the letters (coconuts) fall off. So the uppercase letters – the adults of the lowercase letters, come and help them. Each lowercase letter is then represented by its injury. For example;
- D” having skinned-knee
- “E” having a stubbed toe
- “F” becoming patched up
- “G” all out of breath
- “H” and “I” getting tangled together
I have seen in classrooms a great way for this book to be used as a learning and teaching resource, where a teacher has a cut out coconut tree on the wall of the classroom and has the letters (inside a coconut) hanging of the tree. Another great resource that has been seen is having a PowerPoint set up so the children can click on the coconuts (on the Interactive Whiteboard) and when they do a letter -upper or lower case, appears for the child to name.
So have a read, watch some Youtube songs and welcome to the world of Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!
Lots of Love,
